Service Dog Training

Service dogs are a vital part of daily life for those with physical and mental struggles. They help individuals achieve an independent lifestyle that may otherwise be impossible. But what does it take to train a service dog?

Spoiler alert: It’s more than having a well-behaved dog and a vest.

Certified service dogs must meet certain expectations

Service dogs don’t need to be a specific breed (although larger breeds are required for mobility service) but must possess specific skills. Your service dog must remain calm in stressful and distracting situations, and you must be able to rely on them to answer commands without hesitation.

Your service dog is an extension of you, and you must work together like a well-oiled machine.

While any dog can be a successful member of a loving family, not all dogs have what it takes to become a service dog. Circle City Dog Training can help with the selection process and training.

Types of Service Dog Training

Circle City Dog Training offers psychiatric service dog training and mobility support service dog training. We do not train dogs for medical alert assistance.

Often called emotional support animals, psychiatric service dog training is designed for those who are dealing with issues like depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Mobility support service dog training is for those who have trouble getting around and performing tasks like retrieving items and opening doors. Mobility service dogs must be 50% of their owner’s weight and 40% of their height.

Service dog task training may include:

  • Blocking
  • Deep pressure therapy
  • Behavior interruption
  • Medication retrieval
  • Opening doors
  • And more!

Why choose a professional service dog trainer?

Your service dog must complete the following to qualify for certification:

  1. Basic obedience training
  2. Public access test
  3. Task training

It’s a lot, but having a helping paw can vastly improve your quality of life. Face these challenges without fear by enlisting the help of an experienced, certified dog trainer.
