Asiago: Dog Aggression Case Study
While working with a dog trainer in North Carolina we discussed how having a dog with aggression issues is challenging in its own right. It becomes even more challenging when children are involved. Something must be done to fix the problem, but maybe you’re worried you’ll be told to put the dog down or surrender him/her to a shelter. Maybe you’re worried a trainer would blame you for the behavioral issue. Maybe you’re worried the dog will bite the trainer.
These are all valid concerns, but I can promise that if you choose to talk to me about your dog’s aggression, I will not suggest putting the dog down, I will not suggest sending him/her to a shelter, I will not give you any judgmental looks, and I am confident in my ability to safely interact with any dog.
I’ll find a solution that works with your lifestyle and schedule and solves the problem. Aggression is a matter of behavior, and behavior can be modified. Let me show you how.
I recently had the opportunity to work with a dog named Asiago, who was demonstrating increased resource guarding and desire for dominance. He’d bitten his owner once already, but they were prompted to call me when the owner’s wife discovered she was pregnant. They couldn’t risk having an aggressive dog around their new baby. During the in-home consultation, we took a walk together, and I witnessed Asiago leading the walk, growling at another dog, and paying absolutely no attention to his owners’ commands.
In order to get Asiago’s behavior under control, we implemented a doggie bootcamp of sorts. We had to get quick and long-lasting results, so we used basic obedience training, crate training, proper leash handling techniques, and a structured schedule to get Asiago’s focus where it needed to be–on his owners. Once they learned how to communicate with their pet, they were able to establish a leadership position and develop a foundation of trust and respect.
Now, Asiago understands that his owners are in charge, and what they say goes.
